PT-141 (Bremelanotide)

What Is PT-141?
PT-141 is the developmental name commonly associated with bremelanotide, a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide derived from melanocortin research.
Unlike compounds that act directly on vascular pathways, bremelanotide activates melanocortin receptors within the central nervous system. It has been evaluated in Phase III randomized clinical trials involving premenopausal women with acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder.
A specific bremelanotide formulation received FDA approval in 2019 for this defined population and indication; that approval should not be generalized to other formulations, populations, or proposed uses.

Current Research
Research has examined bremelanotide in relation to melanocortin signaling, sexual desire, central nervous system pathways, and long-term safety.
